🚀 Getting Started — First-Time Guide

A step-by-step walkthrough for new Bitcointalk users. Follow each step and you'll be set up, synced, and climbing ranks in minutes.

🔍 Find Your UID

Your unique Bitcointalk identifier

Every Bitcointalk account has a unique numeric User ID (UID). You can find yours by visiting your profile page. The URL will look like this:

The number after u= is your UID. In the example above, the UID is 123456. Copy this number — you'll need it in the next step.

Auto-Fetch or Manual Mode

In the setup screen, enter your Bitcointalk username and the UID you found in Step 1. Then choose how to get your stats:

⚡ Auto-Fetch

Clicks a button and automatically pulls your live stats from Bitcointalk via a CORS proxy. Fast and accurate — recommended for most users.

✍️ Manual Mode

Type in your stats by hand if Auto-Fetch is blocked in your region or behind a firewall. Values can be updated anytime via Edit Stats.

Once you're in the app, click ⟳ Sync Live Stats in the topbar to pull your latest data. The app tracks these five core metrics:

🏅 Rank — current forum rank

Sync anytime via the topbar button. Remember: Bitcointalk only updates these counters once per hour, so syncing immediately after a post won't show new stats yet.

⚡ Understanding Activity

How activity points are earned

Activity is calculated using the formula: activity = min(periods × 14, total_posts)

Periods — distinct 2-week windows where you've posted at least once
14 max per period — even if you post 100 times in a window, only 14 activity points are earned
Consistency wins — posting once every few days across many periods beats posting 100 times in one week
Hourly updates — Bitcointalk processes activity counters once per hour on their servers

💡 Tip: To maximise activity, post at least once every 2 weeks consistently over many months. Don't burst-post in a single period.

⭐ Understanding Merit

Merit is awarded by other users for high-quality posts. It cannot be earned by posting volume alone — it must be given to you by someone else, especially a Merit Source.

⭐ Merit

Cumulative score. Required to rank up past Member. Cannot be taken away once earned.

💫 sMerit

Sendable merit. When you receive 10 merit, you gain 5 sMerit to pass on to others you find helpful.

🏅 Merit Sources

Designated trusted members who create fresh merit each month. Their awards carry the most weight.

📝 Quality Posting

Long, well-researched, cited posts in high-traffic boards are the most merit-worthy content on the forum.

📈 Improve Your Rank

Strategies that actually work

Ranking up requires a combination of activity and merit. Here are the most effective habits:

✅

Useful, substantive posting — Every post should add value. Aim for 3+ paragraphs with clear structure and evidence.

🗓️

Consistency across periods — Post at least once every 2 weeks, consistently, for months. This maximises activity.

🤝

Help beginners thoroughly — The Beginners & Help board is patrolled by Merit Sources. Detailed, patient answers get rewarded.

🔧

Technical posts with data — Posts citing blockchain explorers, code repositories, or original research attract developer Merit Sources.

📖

Write guides and tutorials — A single excellent, well-structured guide on Bitcoin security or node setup can earn substantial merit.

🔬

Original research posts — Unique on-chain analysis, fee trend reports, or UTXO studies with original charts are highly merit-worthy.

⚠️ What Happens if Sync Fails

Proxy limits, network blocks, and manual mode

The app uses free public CORS proxies to fetch your Bitcointalk profile because browsers cannot directly access external sites. This has some limitations:

Proxy rate limits — Public proxies have monthly request limits. If a proxy is overloaded, it will be skipped and the next one tried automatically.

Network or regional blocks — Some networks or countries block public proxies. If all 4 proxies fail, the app falls back to Manual Mode.

Manual Mode fallback — If sync fails, use ✏ Edit Stats to enter your values by hand. Visit your Bitcointalk profile page to read your current activity, merit, and post count.

💡 Tip: Use the 🔬 Diagnostics panel (topbar) to see which proxy was last used, the response size, and the full sync log.

🔄 Reset & Start Over

⚠️ Warning — this action is permanent.
The app stores all your data locally in your browser's localStorage. Resetting will permanently delete:

All synced stats (activity, merit, posts, sMerit)
All goals and milestones
Your posting streak
All preferences and saved settings
All progress and historical sync data

You will be returned to the onboarding screen to start fresh. This cannot be undone.

Only use this if you want to completely restart the app — for example, if you entered the wrong username or UID during setup, or if you want to track a different account.
